What Is Multiplication โ€” and Why Does It Matter?

Multiplication is repeated addition done fast. Instead of adding 7 five times, you simply know that 7 ร— 5 = 35. Mastering the times tables is one of the highest-leverage math skills a student can build โ€” it makes everything from fractions to algebra dramatically easier.

How to Memorize the Times Tables

Start with the easy tables. Learn ร—1, ร—2, ร—5 and ร—10 first โ€” they follow obvious patterns and give instant confidence before tackling harder ones.

Use skip counting as a bridge. Counting by 3s (3, 6, 9, 12…) before drilling the 3ร— table makes the facts feel familiar rather than random.

Practice in short daily bursts. Five minutes every day beats one long weekly session. Multiplication is a retrieval skill โ€” the more often you retrieve, the faster it gets.

Exploit commutativity. 3 ร— 7 is the same as 7 ร— 3. Once you realize this, the number of unique facts to memorize drops from 144 to just 66.

Times Table Tricks Worth Knowing

ร— 9 Finger Trick

Hold up 10 fingers. For 9 ร— 4, fold down the 4th finger. You get 3 fingers on the left and 6 on the right โ€” answer: 36. Works for 9 ร— 1 through 9 ร— 10.

ร— 5 Always Ends in 0 or 5

Any number times 5 ends in either 0 (even ร— 5) or 5 (odd ร— 5). Spot the pattern and you never have to guess the last digit again.

ร— 11 Up to 9: Just Double the Digit

11 ร— 3 = 33, 11 ร— 7 = 77. For numbers 10 and above it’s a bit more complex, but the easy ones are instant once you see it.

The Hard Ones: 6ร—7, 7ร—8, 6ร—8

These three catch most students. Write them on sticky notes and put them somewhere visible. Repetition beats tricks for these โ€” just drill them daily for a week.
